Amidst the ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and
Canada, the University of Toronto has issued a reassuring message to its
international student community. The university, known for its commitment to
fostering global diversity, aims to provide unwavering support to its students
amidst challenging circumstances. India's recent suspension of visa processing
has created obstacles to face-to-face interactions.
Professor Joseph Wong, Vice-President International at the University of Toronto, acknowledged the concerns of the university
community regarding the evolving situation between Canada and India. He
emphasized that the situation is rapidly changing, leading to uncertainty and
stress among students and faculty. Wong stressed that the institution takes
pride in hosting over 2,400 international students from India, along with
numerous faculty, staff, librarians, and alumni with strong ties to India.
"We want to assure all impacted members of our
community, especially international students, that you are welcome here, and we
are deeply committed to supporting your wellbeing," said Wong. He also
highlighted the university's enduring partnerships in India, supporting
academic collaborations across various disciplines and offering invaluable
global learning opportunities for students.
While acknowledging the short-term challenges posed by
the visa suspension, Wong affirmed the university's commitment to strengthening
relationships through online interactions. The University of Toronto will
closely monitor the impact of the India-Canada situation on its community and
provide updates as the situation unfolds.
The diplomatic standoff between India and Canada was
triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in the
Canadian Parliament. He claimed that Canadian security agencies were actively
investigating potential links between Indian government agents and the killing
of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, Canada. India
strongly refuted these allegations as "absurd" and
"motivated."
In response to the escalating diplomatic row, India
requested Canada to withdraw several dozen diplomats from its missions. India
contends that Canada must reduce its diplomatic presence in the country to
achieve parity, alleging interference by some Canadian diplomats in India's
internal matters.
The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, cited security threats faced by Indian missions in Canada as the reason for suspending visa services. He indicated that the situation would be reviewed regularly.

The impact of the suspension on Indian students in Canada is significant. According to ICEF Monitor, there were 320,000 Indian students with active study permits in Canada by the end of 2022, accounting for nearly 40% of all foreign students. India was the top source country for new international students in Canada in 2022.
Despite the diplomatic tensions, the University of Toronto remains dedicated to its mission of fostering diversity and global collaboration among its students and faculty with ties to India. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to a substantial Indo-Canadian community, further strengthening the university's connection to India.
