US Attorney General Orders Grand Jury in Trump-Russia Probe Reboot

Attorney General Pam Bondi has launched grand jury proceedings into the Trump-Russia probe, acting on a referral from US intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard. The investigation revisits claims that the Obama administration politicised intelligence to target Trump. While charges remain unclear, high-profile figures like John Brennan and James Comey are reportedly under scrutiny.

In a dramatic development reviving one of America’s most politically charged controversies, US Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to present evidence to a grand jury regarding the long-debated Trump-Russia investigation. The move follows a referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who recently accused former President Barack Obama and his team of orchestrating a “years-long coup” against Donald Trump.

While it remains unclear what specific charges may be considered or who might face indictment, sources told CBS News that the order sets the stage for legal proceedings into what Trump has called a fabricated conspiracy to tie his 2016 campaign to Russia. Bondi's directive marks the first formal legal action based on Gabbard’s referral, which drew heavy criticism from Democrats.

Gabbard released a declassified report last month claiming the Obama administration politicised intelligence about Russian interference to harm Trump. Trump reacted by accusing Obama of “treason” — an allegation dismissed by the former president’s spokesperson as “bizarre.” Despite the accusations, previous US intelligence assessments and a bipartisan 2020 Senate report confirmed that Russia did seek to influence the 2016 election in Trump’s favour, though no evidence of direct coordination was found.

The grand jury move comes after a partially declassified appendix from Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation revealed alleged emails suggesting a Clinton campaign effort to smear Trump as a Russian asset. However, Durham found no proof of FBI involvement in any conspiracy, and questioned the authenticity of the emails, which may have been tampered with by Russian hackers.

Former CIA Director John Brennan and ex-FBI Director James Comey are reportedly under criminal investigation, though both deny any misconduct. As Bondi moves forward with grand jury proceedings, the legal and political stakes around the Russiagate narrative are once again front and center in Washington.
