In a deeply regrettable incident, an Indian student named Varun Raj Pucha was attacked in Indiana, prompting a swift response from the United States. The US expressed its condolences and hopes for the victim's speedy recovery following the assault on October 29. Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the US authorities have emphasized that they are deferring to local law enforcement for any inquiries regarding this ongoing case.

Varun Raj Pucha, hailing from Telangana, endured a brutal stabbing, primarily to the head, leaving him in critical condition and requiring life support. Due to the severity of his injuries, he has been transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for advanced medical care. The alleged perpetrator, Jordan Andrade, aged 24, has been apprehended by the police, and an active investigation is underway. Andrade faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder, as per available reports.

In a court appearance before Porter Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Clymer, Jordan Andrade pleaded not guilty to charges comprising a Level 1 felony and a Level 3 felony. The judge, taking into account the severity of the charges and the potential flight risk, set a bond of USD 500,000 in cash and USD 500,000 as surety. Notably, Andrade had claimed he could afford a USD 300,000 bond, but the judge made a different determination.

According to the information provided by the attacker, he had requested a massage on the day of the incident and entered a gym's massage room, where he encountered Varun Raj Pucha, whom he found "a little weird." Perceiving Pucha as a threat, Andrade asserted that he reacted appropriately in self-defense, according to a charging document. Subsequently, the police discovered a significant amount of blood on one of the massage chairs and a folding knife on the counter, reportedly belonging to Andrade.

Varun Raj Pucha has been pursuing an MS in Computer Science in the United States since August 2022. He was scheduled to return to India upon the completion of his course next year. His father, P Ram Murthy, is a teacher in Khammam, Telangana.

This unfortunate incident has raised concerns and garnered attention not only in India but also in the United States, as both nations hope for justice to be served and for Varun Raj Pucha's swift and full recovery.
