US Congratulates Pakistan on Independence Day, Highlights Counterterrorism and Trade Ties

The US congratulated Pakistan on its Independence Day, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio praising cooperation on counterterrorism and trade. The message followed Washington’s designation of the BLA as a terrorist group and came amid discussions on energy investment, security collaboration, and expanded economic ties between the two countries.

The United States has extended warm wishes to Pakistan on its Independence Day, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio praising the country’s role in counterterrorism and bilateral trade. In a formal statement on Thursday, Rubio conveyed congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they marked the 78th anniversary of their independence on August 14.

Rubio emphasized that Washington valued Islamabad’s cooperation in crucial areas, particularly security and economic collaboration. He noted that the US was eager to expand engagement into emerging sectors such as critical minerals and hydrocarbons, alongside fostering business partnerships aimed at mutual prosperity.

The greeting follows a recent US move to designate the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its faction, the Majeed Brigade, as foreign terrorist organisations. The decision, announced on August 11, also placed the Majeed Brigade under the “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” list, aligning with Pakistan’s long-standing request for global action against the group.

These developments come amid deepening US-Pakistan cooperation, marked by recent high-level exchanges including the visit of Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir to Washington. Balochistan—rich in natural resources yet plagued by militancy—is expected to be a focal point for American investment, particularly in energy and mining.

The US and Pakistan also recently concluded a counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to combating extremist threats, with the US delegation, led by Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory D LoGerfo, commending Pakistan’s ongoing security efforts.
