Uttarakhand Police Chief Abhinav Kumar ordered strict measures to curb road accidents, targeting drunk driving, overspeeding, and overloading. His directives include enforcing traffic laws, monitoring bars, deploying speed detectors, and holding guardians accountable for underage driving. The orders aim to reduce accidents and improve road safety.
Amid a spate of road accidents in Uttarakhand, police chief Abhinav Kumar has instructed district police heads to implement stringent measures targeting reckless driving and other violations. The directives, issued in a letter on Thursday, focus on addressing key accident causes, including drunk driving, overspeeding, and overloading.
The orders come in the wake of recent tragedies, including a bus plunging into a gorge in Almora on November 4, killing 38, and an SUV-truck collision in Dehradun on November 11 that claimed six lives. Kumar emphasized the importance of enforcing traffic rules under the Motor Vehicles Act, including seizing vehicles for drunk driving, penalizing overspeeding with radar guns, and taking action against overloaded passenger and goods vehicles.
The letter also highlighted the need for strict checks on licenses of bars and pubs, especially those operating late, and action against public consumption or serving of liquor. Adequate CCTV installations, well-maintained signboards, and speed monitors were identified as critical tools for monitoring compliance and improving road safety.

Kumar underscored the need to address underage driving by holding guardians accountable under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act. Additional measures include establishing checkpoints, deploying alcohol meters, and maintaining vigilance at accident-prone areas to deter violations.
The police chief's directions aim to create a safer driving environment in the state and prevent the recurrence of fatal mishaps.
