In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, police arrested a 29-year-old warden, Monu Pal, for allegedly sexually abusing two brothers, aged 13 and 9, at a special needs school. The school, run by a Delhi-based trust, was shut down after authorities discovered it lacked official recognition and operated without following basic safety standards.

The mother of the victims had enrolled her sons in April, hoping for specialized care. On May 30, when she visited the school, the children confided in her about the abuse. They revealed that the night warden, Pal, had been sexually assaulting and beating them. Acting swiftly, police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Senior police officials confirmed that the children were medically examined, and expert counselors were brought in to record their statements. Investigators seized CCTV footage from the hostel, which provided crucial evidence against the warden. The accused, originally from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, had been working at the school since May 16 without undergoing mandatory police verification.

Geeta Khanna, chairperson of the child rights commission, said the school was operating illegally in a dilapidated rented building. Inspections revealed that neither the school nor the hostel met any statutory requirements. Khanna confirmed that the Child Welfare Committee will now investigate whether other children at the facility were also victims of abuse.

This disturbing case has raised serious concerns about the regulation of private special needs schools and the urgent need for strict enforcement of child safety protocols. Authorities are promising a thorough probe to prevent such incidents and ensure better protection for vulnerable children in institutional care.
