Following a
recent attempted arson at the diplomatic facilities by pro-Khalistan
sympathizers, members of the Indian-American community assembled outside the
Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Friday (local time), brandishing the
Tricolour, to show their support for India and its diplomats there.
They were seen
raising slogans like "Vande Mataram", "Bharat Mata ki Jai"
and "Akhand Bharat Zindabad". The gatherers carried banners with
messages like "We stand with our diplomats" and "Khalistani
Attack on the Consulate is an act of terrorism".
On 2nd July, 2023
a group of Pro-khalistani supporters reportedly set fire to the Indian
Consulate. The fire was suppressed quickly by the SF Fire Department and there
was neither any major damages nor the staffers were harmed. Police were also
carrying out an investigation regarding the incident.
The reported
vandalism and arson attempt was strongly condemned by the US. Matthew Miller,
US state department spokesperson strongly condemning the incident tweeted that
Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the
US is a criminal offense.
Remarks were also
made by the co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on India, Ro Khanna, and
Michael Waltz. They stated that the right to freedom of expression and free
speech is not a license to vandalize property or incite violence. Violence
against diplomatic facilities is a criminal offense which will not be
tolerated. They demanded that the State Department collaborate with law
enforcement to conduct a prompt investigation into the damage at the Indian
Consulate and hold the perpetrators accountable.
