The Wrestling Federation of India's president, Sanjay Singh, welcomed the decision of the United World Wrestling to lift its suspension on India. The ad-hoc committee's significance diminishes as Singh's suspension ends, rendering legal action unnecessary. Singh reaffirms commitment to wrestlers' futures and plans for Olympic trials.
The
Wrestling
Federation of India (WFI) President, Sanjay Singh, expressed gratitude
towards the United World Wrestling (UWW) for revoking the suspension imposed on
India. Singh highlighted that the interim management by the ad-hoc committee is
now inconsequential. He stated, "I appreciate UWW's decision. The ad-hoc
committee's relevance has diminished."
Initially
considering legal recourse against the ad-hoc committee, Singh altered plans
following UWW's suspension lift on WFI. He emphasized the official recognition
received by WFI, thereby concluding his suspension. "With our official
recognition and my suspension terminated, seeking legal advice becomes
redundant," Singh affirmed.
Following
the suspension of WFI by the Sports Ministry of India, the Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) formed a three-member ad-hoc committee, led by Bhupinder
Singh Bajwa. This committee, including Manjusha Kanwar and M.M. Somaya, was
tasked with managing WFI's affairs.
UWW
has urged WFI to ensure non-discriminatory treatment towards wrestlers like
Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia. They had protested against
former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual
harassment. Sanjay assured non-compromise on wrestlers' futures and invited
them for upcoming trials.
In
preparation for the Paris Olympics in July, Sanjay pledged to schedule trials
promptly. He emphasized collaboration with the Sports Ministry for final
decisions and encouraged athletes' participation. "Our focus is on sports
and athletes," Sanjay reiterated, urging everyone to gear up for the
trials.
Sanjay also assured that the WFI would soon convene a meeting to determine the date and other details for the trials. He stated, "We will send a letter to the Sports Ministry regarding this and the ministry will make the final decision."
