At the funeral held in Karjat on Friday, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker paid their last respects to the renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai. The trio had collaborated on the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated movie Lagaan. Nitin, who tragically passed away on Wednesday, was laid to rest at his ND Studios. The somber ceremony saw the presence of friends, colleagues, and family members who gathered to bid him a final farewell.
Upon their arrival, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker exchanged greetings with a number of individuals at the entrance before proceeding indoors. Notably, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was also spotted among the attendees. Heartrending photographs from the funeral capture Nitin's grieving family beside his remains, with his daughter Mansi bravely participating in carrying his bier, symbolizing a poignant and solemn moment.
On Thursday, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Pawar paid a visit to the mortuary at Sir JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where the body of Nitin Chandrakant Desai was placed. Expressing his condolences, Shinde also took to Twitter to share his sentiments.
Today, we bid farewell to the veteran art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai. This news is both unfortunate and shocking. Desai, who crafted unique and captivating set designs for Marathi and Hindi films, has left behind a void. His deep connection with Tembhi Naka Devi, a revered temple in Maharashtra, marked a continuation of a cherished tradition initiated by Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Saheb. Under his guidance, Navratri celebrations at the temple reached new heights of grandeur and were etched into memory.
His artworks were eagerly anticipated and appreciated by the public. It is truly distressing that we have lost such a kind and modest soul, who was also a dear friend. Today, our film industry mourns the loss of a remarkable individual," Shinde expressed in Marathi.
On Wednesday, Nitin Desai was tragically discovered dead at his Karjat studio in Raigad district. His firm, ND Art World Pvt. Ltd., had procured a total of ₹185 crore through two loans from ECL Finance, a subsidiary of the Edelweiss Group, in the years 2016 and 2018. However, repayment complications emerged in January 2020, leading to mounting troubles.
