Two Meitei youths abducted by armed Kuki militants in Manipur have been safely released, confirmed CM Biren Singh. Their abduction had caused widespread protests, leading to a shutdown across Imphal Valley districts.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the safe return of two Meitei youths, Oinam Thoithoi Singh and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei, who were abducted by armed Kuki militants on September 27 from Kangpokpi district. The youths were safely handed over to the state police on Thursday, marking the end of a tense situation that had disrupted daily life in several districts of Imphal Valley.
Following their abduction, a shutdown led by the Meitei Joint Action Committee (JAC) caused widespread disruption in districts including Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur, with protesters blocking key roads, including National Highway 102. Shops and businesses remained closed, with police reporting women protestors blocking highways at various points.
CM Biren Singh praised the efforts of both state and central government authorities in ensuring the safe return of the youths. The abduction had stirred political tensions, with the Congress party criticizing the state government for its delayed response. Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam had urged Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene, calling the militants’ actions a form of terrorism.
