The anticipation surrounding Australia's clash with Afghanistan took an intriguing twist when Afghan pacer Naveen ul Haq called into question Australia's commitment to human rights. Naveen referred to a three-match ODI series between the two teams that Australia had canceled earlier in the year. In an Instagram story, Naveen wondered whether Australia's priorities were human rights or securing two points in the World Cup.

In the backstory, Australia and Afghanistan were originally scheduled to compete in a three-match ODI series in the United Arab Emirates in March.
