the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup continued as they defeated arch-rivals England
by a margin of 33 runs in Ahmedabad on Saturday, November 4. This victory
solidified their position in third place on the points table. With upcoming
matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh, it seems Australia is poised to
maintain its third-place standing throughout the group stage.
The anticipation surrounding Australia's clash with Afghanistan took an intriguing twist when Afghan pacer Naveen ul Haq
called into question Australia's commitment to human rights. Naveen referred to
a three-match ODI series between the two teams that Australia had canceled
earlier in the year. In an Instagram story, Naveen wondered whether Australia's
priorities were human rights or securing two points in the World Cup.
In the backstory, Australia and Afghanistan were originally scheduled to compete in a three-match ODI series in the United Arab Emirates in March. However, Cricket Australia opted to cancel the series in January, citing concerns over the Taliban's limitations on women's and girls' education, employment opportunities, and access to public facilities like parks and gyms.

Cricket Australia expressed its
dedication to promoting cricket for both men and women globally, including in
Afghanistan. They also conveyed their intention to engage with the Afghanistan
Cricket Board in the hope of seeing improved conditions for women and girls in
the country.
While Naveen's statement has generated
attention and debate, it is unlikely that any team would forfeit crucial World
Cup points willingly. Australia remains the favorite against Afghanistan,
despite the latter's recent success, with three consecutive wins under the
leadership of Hashmatullah Shahidi.
As the AUS-AFG World Cup match approaches, the spotlight is on Australia, with their commitment to human rights and the pursuit of cricketing glory being scrutinized by Naveen ul Haq's challenging inquiry. The game promises to be more than just a contest on the field, as it carries the weight of important questions about ethics and values in the world of cricket.
