The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi is set to introduce changes in the teaching pattern for final year MBBS students. The aim is to enhance their clinical knowledge and improve patient care skills, as well as prepare them for future competitive exams. A committee has been formed to suggest reforms in teaching, training, and evaluation methods.
The decision was made after it was observed that students had poor attendance in lecture classes and were more focused on coaching classes for postgraduate entrance exams. The evolution of teaching and learning methods, with the increased use of online resources and simulation-based training, further necessitated the need for modifications.
An 11-member committee, headed by Dr. Piyush Ranjan from the medicine department, has been tasked with proposing necessary changes within two months. The committee will consult with stakeholders and develop a validated model for nationwide implementation. Once the report is submitted, it will be reviewed by the Dean for approval and subsequent implementation.
This marks the first time that the teaching, training, and evaluation pattern at AIIMS will undergo such a transformation. A survey was conducted prior to forming the committee, and it was found that students desired a shift towards a clinical-based knowledge approach while also including topics relevant to postgraduate exams. The new pattern will be competency-based, providing comprehensive knowledge in one place.
The anticipated changes aim to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, ensuring that students receive holistic education and are well-prepared for their future medical careers. By aligning the teaching pattern with the requirements of postgraduate entrance exams, AIIMS aims to enhance the academic and professional success of its students.
