During the book launch event for "Irrfan Khan: A Life in Movies," authored by Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta, Sutapa Sikdar, the actor's spouse, shed light on Irrfan Khan's propensity for improvisation in movie scenes. Fondly recalling a notable instance from the production of "Piku," Sutapa recounted how Irrfan's spontaneous improvisation initially perturbed Amitabh Bachchan. However, with time, their rapport blossomed into friendship, resolving any initial concerns.
"Sutapa shared, 'Irrfan collaborated closely with both the director and the writer. After numerous drafts, when he stepped onto the stage, he would organically introduce improvisations. His aim was never to seize the spotlight; rather, he sought to infuse a distinctive rhythm into the dialogue.'"
Sutapa, an accomplished writer in her own right, reminisced about a dialogue she shared with director Shoojit Sircar, the creative force behind the film "Piku." Recounting their exchange, Sutapa revealed, "Shoojit informed me that Bachchan saab is meticulously structured and thoroughly prepared, whereas Irrfan would often improvise, initially causing a stir. Eventually, their camaraderie blossomed into friendship."
Discussing the captivating interval sequence that garnered widespread acclaim, Sutapa revealed that the entirety of the scene was born out of improvisation. Shubhra chimed in, noting, "Shoojit admitted he lacked the audacity to trim it." Reflecting on their collaboration, Shubhra recounted Shoojit's words, "While directing Irrfan [during the making of] Piku, there were moments when I hesitated to utter 'Cut'." The memorable interval scene depicted Deepika, Irrfan, and Big B's characters engaged in a heated dispute while stranded on a highway.
