The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has launched a significant crackdown on social media activists affiliated with the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). Police have arrested 49 individuals, filed 147 cases, and issued 680 notices, claiming these social media posts crossed boundaries by targeting the wives and daughters of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders, including Naidu’s own family members.

TDP representatives argue that the posts include vulgar and defamatory content aimed at degrading leaders’ families. Allegedly, these posts spread misinformation and created social unrest by promoting enmity among different groups. Some activists face charges under the IT Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for content involving image manipulation, defamation, and public mischief.

A TDP spokesperson condemned the posts as "below the belt," citing the personal targeting of women leaders like Home Minister Anitha. Police investigations revealed that certain YSRCP activists, including a prominent co-convener, used numerous online channels to distribute defamatory material. Police officials stated that these actions had compromised social harmony, necessitating intervention.

YSRCP leader and former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the TDP of undermining democratic principles through these arrests, asserting that the government’s actions infringe on citizens’ rights to free speech. Reddy called the crackdown an example of "vendetta politics," meant to suppress opposition voices rather than foster democratic values.
