According to the press release by Delhi CM's office, on Thursday, 20th July, 2023, the government of Delhi announced to provide free sugar to more than 2.80 lakh low-income families in Delhi till December.

 

The press release stated that the Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, had approved a proposal to offer free sugar to the residents of Delhi. The press release mentioned that this measure aimed at easing the difficulties experienced by underprivileged families and ensuring food security for everyone.

 

"The Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has approved a proposal to provide free sugar to the residents of Delhi. This move aims to alleviate the hardships faced by underprivileged families and ensure food security for all," read the press release.

The Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration Card holders, the beneficiaries of this scheme will be given sugar free of cost effective from January 2023 till December 2023.

 

The statement in the press release, further mentioned that in order to ensure the smooth execution of this scheme, the issue of providing free sugar as part of the Sugar Subsidy Scheme, particularly 1 kg of sugar to Antyodaya Anna Yojana category cardholders, was presented for deliberation before the Council of Ministers. Subsequently, the Council of Ministers approved the proposal for free sugar distribution to the eligible beneficiaries.

Currently the beneficiaries of AAY, households are considered poorest of the poor and legally receive 5 kgs of food grains per family per month. Whereas, the NFSA (National Food Security Act, 2013) beneficiaries are entitled to 5 kg of food grains per person per month.

 

This decision is expected to benefit around 2,80,290 beneficiaries, of which 68,747 are National Food Security Cardholders. The estimated budget needed for the implementation of this initiative is approximately Rs 1.11 crores.
