Haris Rauf, Pakistan's premier pacer, was injured and is unable to bowl in the rest of Pakistan's Asia Cup Super 4 match against India.
Pakistan's bowling coach Morne Morkel acknowledged that the decision was made because of Rauf's right flank pain.
During the game, Rauf started having problems because of pain in his oblique muscle. After subsequent imaging revealed inflammation, the Pakistani coaching staff took the precautionary measure of limiting his bowling.
Morkel offered an explanation for the decision: "With the World Cup round the corner, it is precautionary, and we'll have to use the other boys to fill the overs."
Earlier in the game, Haris Rauf had bowled five overs, allowing 27 runs while not picking up a single wicket. His presence did, however, slow down India's scoring, which had been picking up steam thanks to the efforts of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Rauf's absence poses a challenge for Pakistan, requiring other bowlers to complete the remaining five overs that were initially allocated to him. While Faheem Ashraf's availability provides the option of three pacers, the choice to replace Rauf may come down to Iftikhar Ahmed or Agha Salman, both capable of contributing with spin while also being batting all-rounders.
In previous games, Rauf showcased his prowess by taking key wickets against India and Bangladesh. However, the extent of his injury remains a concern for Pakistan, given his status as one of their most explosive pacers, known for his exceptional speed.
Pakistan will closely monitor Rauf's condition as they prepare for future matches, keeping the upcoming World Cup in mind. His recovery will be crucial for Pakistan's bowling attack as they aim to make a strong impact in international cricket.
