Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the government's intent to completely remove the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state by 2023.

In his Independence Day speech at Khanapara Playground, Sarma mentioned that the AFSPA is currently enforced in eight districts, but his administration aims to eliminate it by year-end.

Four peace treaties were signed with rebel groups, and over 8,000 militants were integrated into mainstream politics during his tenure, which he used to demonstrate that the situation was improving.

The chief minister has stated his intention to rid Assam of both drugs and corruption.

Sarma emphasised his administration's "zero tolerance" for corruption by saying that 127 government officials have been arrested over the past two years. He emphasised the government's decision to fire the detained workers.

Sarma declared that serious legislation to outlaw polygamy in the state would be introduced by the government. In his speech, the prime minister highlighted the government's dedication to a number of anti-corruption, political, and social initiatives.
