Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the government's intent to completely remove the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state by 2023.
In his Independence Day speech at Khanapara Playground, Sarma mentioned that the AFSPA is currently enforced in eight districts, but his administration aims to eliminate it by year-end.
Four peace treaties were signed with rebel groups, and over 8,000 militants were integrated into mainstream politics during his tenure, which he used to demonstrate that the situation was improving.
The chief minister has stated his intention to rid Assam of both drugs and corruption.
Sarma emphasised his administration's "zero tolerance" for corruption by saying that 127 government officials have been arrested over the past two years. He emphasised the government's decision to fire the detained workers.
Sarma declared that serious legislation to outlaw polygamy in the state would be introduced by the government. In his speech, the prime minister highlighted the government's dedication to a number of anti-corruption, political, and social initiatives.
The 77th celebration of independence was also celebrated with great fervour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has led the celebrations for the past ten years, spoke to the people from the ancient Red Fort in New Delhi. In his address, he lauded the nation's successes and renewed the government's dedication to progress and prosperity.
The state of Assam is making strides towards normalcy and stability, and the chief minister's announcement regarding the repeal of AFSPA is indicative of this. The administration's focus on fighting corruption and solving social problems is in line with its stated objective of creating a more open and progressive government. The remarks made by state and national officials on the occasion of India's Independence Day emphasised the country's continued efforts towards growth, development, and a more inclusive society.
