Assam CM's Wife Files Rs 10 Crore Defamation Suit Against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has filed a defamation suit against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

The claim is reportedly worth Rs 10 crore. Sarma filed suit because of "false" claims of wrongdoing in a food processing project.

Senior advocate Devajit Saikia, who is representing Assam’s wife, told PTI that the case has been filed with the Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) in Kamrup Metropolitan and will be heard on September 26.

"My client has claimed a defamation of Rs 10 crore against Gaurav Gogoi for various tweets on X. We have made it very clear that we never made any application to receive subsidy," he added.

'The Crosscurrent,' a digital media source based in Guwahati, wrote an article saying that agricultural land had been reclassified as industrial land shortly after being purchased by Sarma's firm, 'Pride East Entertainments.'

This led to the uproar and sparked allegations that the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) and the Scheme for Creation of Infrastructure for Agro Clusters were improperly approving subsidies.

To get to the bottom of the subsidy mystery, Gaurav Gogoi contacted Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

He mentioned that under the PMKSY, M/S Pride East Entertainment Pvt Ltd had been awarded a grant of Rs 10 crore by the Ministry of Food Processing.

This legal battle adds a new dimension to the ongoing political feud between the Assam Chief Minister's family and the Congress MP.
