A US military aircraft, the C-17, carrying 205 Indian migrants is expected to land in Amritsar on Wednesday. The deportation aligns with the US government's intensified crackdown on illegal immigration under President Donald Trump's second term. The majority of those deported are reportedly from Punjab and surrounding states.

This mass deportation comes as part of the Trump administration’s stricter immigration policies. Many of these individuals had entered the US through illegal means, often spending large sums to facilitate their journey.

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal expressed disappointment over the move, stating that these migrants contributed to the US economy and should have been considered for permanent residency. He urged the Indian government to take appropriate steps to support those returning home.

Meanwhile, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the issue was discussed at a high-level meeting. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed authorities to set up dedicated counters to assist the deported individuals upon arrival.

The Indian government has yet to release an official statement regarding this deportation. However, reports suggest that India is negotiating with the US to manage the repatriation of undocumented Indian migrants. A previous report indicated that the US had identified approximately 220,000 undocumented Indians as of 2022.

Trump’s administration has escalated immigration enforcement, deploying military personnel to the southern border and ramping up deportation efforts. The large-scale return of Indian migrants is expected to create challenges for both state and central governments, necessitating urgent measures for their rehabilitation.
