Australia Expels Iranian Envoys Over Alleged Antisemitic Attacks

Australia has expelled Iran’s ambassador and three diplomats, accusing Tehran of involvement in antisemitic attacks in Melbourne and Sydney. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the officials must leave within seven days. The move drew support from Jewish organizations but risks escalating diplomatic tensions between Australia and Iran.

Australia has expelled Iran’s ambassador and three senior diplomats after accusing Tehran of involvement in a series of antisemitic incidents in Melbourne and Sydney. The unprecedented move signals a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries, which have faced recurring diplomatic tensions in recent years.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on Tuesday that the envoys were ordered to leave the country within seven days. The government alleged that the attacks, which targeted Jewish communities and properties in Australia’s largest cities, were orchestrated with support linked to Iranian networks. Security agencies had been investigating the incidents for weeks, with mounting evidence pointing toward Tehran’s involvement.

The decision comes amid growing international concern over the spread of antisemitic violence, particularly in Western democracies. Albanese stated that Australia would not tolerate foreign interference that threatens community safety or fuels hatred. He emphasized that the government’s priority was to protect all Australians, including religious minorities, from intimidation and violence.

Iran has yet to officially respond to the expulsion, though analysts expect Tehran to reject the allegations and potentially retaliate diplomatically. Experts warn that the episode could further strain Australia’s ties with Middle Eastern nations, especially as global tensions involving Iran remain high.

Jewish organizations in Australia welcomed the government’s action, calling it a strong message against hate crimes. However, community leaders also urged continued vigilance, stressing the need for stronger protections and monitoring to prevent future incidents.

The expulsions mark one of the most severe diplomatic measures Australia has taken in recent memory. As Canberra waits for Iran’s reaction, international observers are closely watching how this dispute might affect wider geopolitical alignments and Australia’s role in confronting antisemitism on the global stage.
