Bangladesh to Hold General Election in February 2026, Says Election Commission Chief

Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner announced that national elections will be held in early February 2026, amid efforts to restore public trust after years of political unrest. Following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, interim leader Muhammad Yunus pledged a peaceful and transparent vote, while the election body works to combat voter apathy and security concerns.

Bangladesh will hold its next general election in the first week of February 2026, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin announced on Saturday. While the exact date will be disclosed about two months prior, the CEC said preparations are already underway to ensure the vote is free, fair, and impartial.

The announcement follows political turbulence that saw former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina removed from office in August 2024 after mass student protests. Since then, the country has been governed by an interim administration led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who earlier confirmed February 2026 as the targeted election month.

Nasir Uddin acknowledged deep public distrust in Bangladesh’s electoral process, citing years of alleged irregularities and lack of transparency. “People have lost confidence in the election system, the Election Commission, and the administrative machinery involved,” he said during an event in Rangpur district. The CEC warned of rising voter apathy, noting that citizens have become increasingly disengaged from the democratic process.

Despite these challenges, the Election Commission is working “tirelessly” to rebuild credibility. Uddin pledged that all election activities would be conducted strictly according to laws and regulations. He also stressed that the nation’s law and order situation is stable, with efforts underway to further improve security so citizens can vote without fear.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has called for the upcoming polls to be a celebration of democracy, urging both institutional readiness and public enthusiasm. He expressed hope that the 2026 election would be remembered for peace, high voter turnout, and a cordial political environment.
