According to Variety, Greta Gerwig's directorial film 'Barbie' had a remarkable opening weekend, grossing USD 155 million. This outstanding debut sets a new record as the highest-grossing premiere for a movie directed by a woman.
Before 'Barbie,' the title of the highest-grossing debut for a film directed by a woman belonged to 'Captain Marvel.' The movie, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, earned USD 153 million in 2019.
Prior to 'Captain Marvel,' filmmaker Patty Jenkins held the record for the highest-grossing debut of a movie solely directed by a woman. Her film 'Wonder Woman' achieved an impressive USD 103 million debut in 2017.
In addition to its achievement as the biggest debut for a film directed by a woman, 'Barbie' has secured various other box office records, including the title for the highest opening weekend of the year. It surpassed 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' which earned USD 146 million.
With a budget of USD 145 million, 'Barbie' was a substantial production. Notably, the movie's marketing campaign played a crucial role in generating mainstream interest well before its theatrical release. The budget of promoting was excluded from the production budget. Greta Gerwig, the acclaimed Oscar-nominated director behind 'Lady Bird' and 'Little Women,' collaborated with Noah Baumbach to co-write the film's screenplay.
Taking on the roles of the iconic characters Barbie and Ken, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling lead the cast in 'Barbie,' portraying their stereotypical versions. The storyline follows their journey of self-discovery as they venture out of Barbie Land and into the real world. Joining the star-studded ensemble are talented actors and personalities like Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, John Cena, and Will Ferrell.
