West Bengal Minister Swapan Debnath sparked a row after suggesting that parents should monitor their daughters during the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest, citing an incident involving alcohol consumption. The Trinamool Congress distanced itself from his remarks, affirming that it does not support moral policing or restricting personal freedoms.

West Bengal Minister Swapan Debnath stirred controversy with comments about women's behavior during the ‘Reclaim the Night’ movement. Debnath claimed that a protester was seen drinking alcohol with men after the event, suggesting that parents should monitor their daughters when they participate in such protests. The minister’s remarks have sparked a debate over gender norms and personal freedoms.

During a recent speech in Purba Bardhaman district, Debnath shared an incident from the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest in Purbasthali, where a woman and two men were reportedly seen drinking beer at a hotel. The protest, held on September 8, was organized to demand justice for a doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

“What if something untoward had happened to the woman? Our men were vigilant, but what if they weren't? I urge parents to be careful about what their daughters do after joining protests,” said Debnath, adding that he had advised local hotel owners not to sell liquor to women after midnight.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) quickly distanced itself from Debnath's comments. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh stated that the party does not endorse such views, emphasizing that it is not their role to dictate personal behavior. "We are not into moral policing," he said, although he acknowledged the underlying concern for women’s safety.
