The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday to seek the restoration of Article 370, sparking uproar as BJP legislators protested vehemently. The resolution, which was passed through a voice vote, calls for reinstating the special status of J&K that was revoked by the central government on August 5, 2019.

The assembly proceedings were marked by a heated exchange, with BJP members chanting slogans like "Jai Shri Ram," "Vande Mataram," and "Pakistani Agenda Nahin Chalega." BJP legislators tore copies of the resolution and accused the National Conference-led government of pushing an “anti-national agenda.” Leader of opposition Sunil Sharma criticized the Speaker for alleged partisanship, asserting that the resolution was drafted “in collusion” with National Conference leaders.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary moved the resolution, emphasizing the need for constitutional guarantees to preserve J&K's unique identity, culture, and rights. The resolution urges the Government of India to initiate a dialogue with J&K representatives to restore these provisions, with a focus on balancing national unity and the region’s aspirations.
