BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri faces backlash for making derogatory comments about Delhi CM Atishi's surname and Priyanka Gandhi. AAP condemned the remarks as disrespectful to women, while Congress criticized BJP's anti-women stance. Bidhuri later apologized, claiming his remarks were misinterpreted. The controversy escalates ahead of Delhi's February elections.
BJP's Kalkaji candidate Ramesh Bidhuri has sparked a fresh controversy with derogatory comments about Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Speaking at a 'Parivartan Rally' in Rohini, Bidhuri criticized Atishi for changing her surname from "Marlena" to "Singh," implying that her shift in identity reflected dishonesty. He also accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of hypocrisy, claiming that Atishi's change of surname indicated a lack of integrity.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swiftly condemned Bidhuri’s remarks, accusing the BJP of crossing all limits of decency. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal responded by emphasizing that the people of Delhi would not tolerate the insult of a woman chief minister and that women across the city would seek retribution for this disrespect. AAP also condemned the BJP’s anti-women mindset, particularly calling out Bidhuri's words as unacceptable for any potential legislator.
Earlier, Bidhuri attracted criticism over an inappropriate remark about Priyanka Gandhi, in which he claimed he would make the roads of the Kalkaji assembly seat as smooth as Gandhi's cheeks. Congress leaders condemned this comment, calling it an example of BJP's misogyny. Congress leader Supriya Srinate labeled the statement as disgraceful and reflective of a "disgusting mentality."
Though Bidhuri initially defended his comments by comparing them to similar remarks made by RJD leader Lalu Prasad, he later issued a public apology, expressing regret if his statements had hurt anyone and suggesting that they had been misinterpreted for political reasons.
