Brazilian
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva drew parallels between Israel's actions
in Gaza and the Holocaust during World War II, triggering a fierce response
from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Lula's remarks, made at the
African Union summit, sparked a diplomatic confrontation between Brazil and
Israel.
Addressing
reporters at the African Union summit in Ethiopia, Lula accused Israel of
committing 'genocide' in Gaza, comparing it to the Holocaust perpetrated by
Nazi Germany. He emphasized the severity of the situation in Gaza, stressing
that it had no historical parallel except for the Holocaust.
The
conflict in Gaza was ignited by an attack by Hamas militants on October 7,
resulting in casualties and hostages on both sides. While condemning Hamas'
actions, Lula advocated for a ceasefire and criticized Israel's
disproportionate response, leading to civilian casualties and a humanitarian
crisis.
Lula's previous condemnation of Israel's actions as genocide has stirred controversy, with Israel branding his remarks as anti-Semitic. Netanyahu condemned Lula for trivializing the Holocaust and demonizing Israel, prompting a strong diplomatic response from Israel.

In
response to Lula's comments, Israel summoned Brazil's ambassador for a
reprimand and criticized Brazil's stance on the conflict. The Brazilian
Israelite Confederation denounced Lula's remarks as a distortion of reality and
an offense to Holocaust victims.
Despite
growing calls for a ceasefire, Netanyahu vowed to continue the offensive in
Gaza until the hostages are released. The US, Israel's ally, expressed hope for
a ceasefire but remains at odds with Israel over Palestinian statehood.
As
tensions escalate, Israeli airstrikes continue to target Gaza, resulting in
civilian casualties. The international community supports a peaceful
resolution, but Netanyahu's government remains determined to achieve victory
over Hamas.
