The BSF seized ₹1.4 crore worth of Phensedyl cough syrup from underground tanks near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Nadia district. The operation highlights the growing challenge of cross-border smuggling, with the syrup's value skyrocketing in Bangladesh due to its use as an alcohol substitute.
The Border Security Force (BSF) seized 62,200 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup, valued at ₹1.4 crore, near the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Nadia district. The seizure followed intelligence-led raids near the Tungi border outpost on Friday.
Three underground chambers, located within 2 km of the border, were discovered during the operation. These chambers, concealed by dense vegetation and makeshift structures, housed large iron tanks, each measuring about 7 feet in height and 10 feet in length. Phensedyl bottles, stacked in boxes, were hidden in these tanks, said BSF officials.
The confiscated stock represents nearly half the quantity the BSF South Bengal Frontier seized in 2024, which totaled 1,73,628 bottles worth ₹3.6 crore. Phensedyl, containing codeine, is legally manufactured in Himachal Pradesh but is smuggled into Bangladesh as a substitute for alcohol. Its value multiplies across the border, reaching up to ₹2,000 per bottle in Dhaka.
Smuggling networks procure the syrup through dealers in Varanasi and Lucknow before transporting it to West Bengal’s border villages. Local smugglers, referred to as the "labour party," carry these consignments across the border for ₹300-₹500 per trip.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is expected to investigate the case further. The BSF emphasized the role of advanced surveillance and intelligence sharing in curbing cross-border smuggling activities.
