Canadian National Arrested

In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken into custody a Canadian citizen named Rahul Gangal, as part of an ongoing investigation into a defense espionage case that has sent shockwaves throughout India's security apparatus. Gangal's arrest is linked to a high-stakes probe into the illicit acquisition of sensitive defense and armed forces documents, which he is alleged to have facilitated in conjunction with journalist Vivek Raghuvanshi.

Rahul Gangal, known for his involvement as a defense dealer and affiliations with the Germany-based consultancy firm Roland Berger, faces a litany of accusations spanning aerospace, defense, engineering products, automotive, homeland security, and infrastructure sectors. He also brings a wealth of experience in investment banking and private equity transactions within the aerospace, defense, and security realms, adding layers of complexity to the investigation.

Gangal, who obtained permanent residency in Canada in 2019, was detained by the CBI upon his arrival in India on Monday. A special court has authorized a four-day remand for the accused, underscoring the gravity of the charges against him.

This arrest follows in the wake of a similar case and raises concerns about the existence of a potentially expansive international espionage network. In May, the CBI apprehended former Navy commander Ashish Pathak and independent journalist Vivek Raghuvanshi on espionage allegations. They stand accused of surreptitiously acquiring sensitive defense information and transmitting it to foreign intelligence agencies.

Both Raghuvanshi and Pathak face serious charges under the Official Secrets Act and the Indian Penal Code. The CBI contends that their actions had compromised India's national security by divulging classified information, with the potential to strain diplomatic relations with friendly nations. The agency harbors suspicions of an international syndicate at play, involving Indian journalists in the distribution of strategic secrets to hostile foreign intelligence entities.

As this espionage saga continues to unfold, authorities are intensifying their efforts to dismantle what appears to be a complex and far-reaching network, with potentially dire implications for India's national security and its standing on the global stage.
