Facebook, celebrating its 20th anniversary, reminisces about ts evolution under Mark Zuckerberg's leadership. With Meta's expanding influence, Zuckerberg shares insights on Instagram's success and the challenges faced by Facebook.
Facebook,
founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, recently marked its 20th anniversary,
showcasing the remarkable journey of the social media giant. Zuckerberg, the
visionary behind the platform, took to Instagram to share a reel reflecting on
the past two decades. In the video, he nostalgically displayed his first
Facebook profile picture, expressing gratitude for the incredible people and
projects that contributed to the platform's growth.
The
official Instagram handle of Facebook affectionately commented, "Love you,
dad," recognizing Zuckerberg's pivotal role in the platform's success. In
its inaugural year, Facebook quickly garnered one million users, outpacing its
competitor MySpace within four years. The user base soared to a billion per
month by 2012 and reached a staggering 2.11 billion daily users by the end of
2023.
Mark Zuckerberg, now the fifth richest person globally, leads Meta, Facebook's parent company. Meta's suite of apps, comprising Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, collectively engages 3.19 billion users daily. The monthly active users for Meta's family of apps reached 3.98 billion as of December 31, 2023, reflecting a six percent year-over-year increase.
Despite
Meta's financial success, it faced substantial fines for data privacy breaches.
Notably, Facebook settled a $725 million legal action in 2014 over the
Cambridge Analytica scandal. In 2022, a 265 million euro fine was imposed for
data extraction, and in 2023, a record 1.2 billion euro fine for data transfer
violations is under appeal.
Meta's
financial report for Q4 2023 revealed revenue exceeding $40 billion,
establishing itself as an advertising giant with profits of around $14 billion.
Amidst its dominance, Instagram Threads witnessed a surge, boasting 130 million
monthly active users, although initial enthusiasm waned over time. Zuckerberg
remains optimistic, emphasizing Threads' steady growth during Meta's
fourth-quarter earnings call.
