the charismatic leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a revered
Tamil film icon, breathed his last in Chennai following a prolonged illness.
His demise on December 28, 2023, at a medical facility in Chennai, marks the
end of an era for both Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and its cinematic
realm.
The
news of Vijayakanth's passing surfaced through an official statement released
by MIOT International. The statement confirmed that the 71-year-old leader was
under ventilatory support due to pneumonia. Despite the tireless efforts of
medical professionals, Vijayakanth succumbed to his illness in the morning.
Earlier
reports had highlighted his deteriorating health condition, leading to his
hospitalization and subsequent ventilation. The DMDK had officially confirmed
that he tested positive for COVID-19, exacerbating his respiratory distress and
necessitating ventilator support.
His
absence had been palpable in the political sphere, with his wife, Premalatha,
taking over the reins of the party in his absence. Vijayakanth, a former
Opposition Leader in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2016, had transitioned from a
highly successful career in acting, production, and direction to a prominent
