His demise on December 28, 2023, at a medical facility in Chennai, marks the end of an era for both Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and its cinematic realm.

The news of Vijayakanth's passing surfaced through an official statement released by MIOT International. The statement confirmed that the 71-year-old leader was under ventilatory support due to pneumonia. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Vijayakanth succumbed to his illness in the morning.
