Vijayakanth, the charismatic leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a revered Tamil film icon, breathed his last in Chennai following a prolonged illness. His demise on December 28, 2023, at a medical facility in Chennai, marks the end of an era for both Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and its cinematic realm.

The news of Vijayakanth's passing surfaced through an official statement released by MIOT International. The statement confirmed that the 71-year-old leader was under ventilatory support due to pneumonia. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Vijayakanth succumbed to his illness in the morning.

Earlier reports had highlighted his deteriorating health condition, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent ventilation. The DMDK had officially confirmed that he tested positive for COVID-19, exacerbating his respiratory distress and necessitating ventilator support.

His absence had been palpable in the political sphere, with his wife, Premalatha, taking over the reins of the party in his absence. Vijayakanth, a former Opposition Leader in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2016, had transitioned from a highly successful career in acting, production, and direction to a prominent political figure, leaving an indelible mark in both arenas.

The news of his demise reverberated across the nation, prompting heartfelt condolences from political leaders, prominent personalities, and citizens alike. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter, expressing deep sadness over the loss. He praised Vijayakanth's illustrious career in the Tamil film industry and acknowledged his unwavering commitment to public service, emphasizing the void his passing leaves in Tamil Nadu’s political fabric.
