Assam Police apprehended Congress MLA Aftabuddin Mollah on November 8 due to derogatory remarks against priests, Namgharias, and seers. The arrest followed an incident where the politician allegedly delivered an inflammatory speech targeting these individuals during a public gathering in Goalpara district on November 4.

The Congress MLA, Aftabuddin Mollah, represents the Jaleswar Assembly constituency in Assam. Assam Police officials confirmed the arrest and revealed that the case was registered at Dispur police station under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on a complaint.

The derogatory comments made by Mollah against priests, Namgharias, and seers drew immediate public outrage, prompting the police to take swift action. The arrest serves as a reminder that inflammatory speech targeting any section of society, especially individuals associated with religious or spiritual practices, will not be tolerated.

This incident emphasizes the importance of maintaining respect and sensitivity towards all sections of society, regardless of one's political affiliations. The arrest of a sitting MLA for such comments sends a strong message about the consequences of making derogatory remarks against any community.

As the legal proceedings continue, the specific charges against Aftabuddin Mollah will be clarified. In the wake of this incident, it is expected that there will be ongoing discussions about the responsibility of public figures to choose their words carefully and promote harmony within the community.

The arrest serves as a stark reminder that freedom of speech should be exercised responsibly and within the boundaries of respect for all individuals, particularly those holding positions of religious or spiritual significance. This case is another instance where legal action has been taken to ensure that derogatory comments and hate speech do not go unpunished in a diverse and pluralistic society like India.
