Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has taken a stand against the recurring internet shutdowns in India, expressing his bewilderment that a vibrant democracy like ours resorts to such extreme measures. As the nation awaits a crucial Supreme Court hearing on the Manipur internet shutdown, Tharoor passionately calls for an end to this "awful practice."
Having been a part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, Tharoor emphasizes that the government has failed to justify these shutdowns as an effective means to curb violence or terrorism. In fact, the shutdowns seem to have little impact on violence while inflicting considerable inconvenience on ordinary citizens.
Notably, on July 7, the Manipur high court issued an order to conduct physical trials to explore ways of providing internet services securely, protecting citizens' rights and property. However, the government contested this order in the Supreme Court.
Tharoor's hope lies with the Supreme Court, which he believes should prioritize the citizens' rights over bureaucratic indifference. He urges the court to comprehend the widespread implications of internet shutdowns on essential activities like banking, credit card transactions, enrollments, exams, and access to vital information. The time has come for the court to put an end to this regressive practice once and for all, advocating for the freedom and convenience of every Indian citizen.
