Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge on August 24 criticised the Prime Minister Modi-led central government, claiming that its actions are undermining the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Kharge, a prominent figure within the Congress party, who chose platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to voice these concerns. He shared an image that depicted the 'RTI' abbreviation buried beneath a hammer emblazoned with the saffron Lotus symbol, a potent political emblem.
Alongside this image, Kharge posted a caption that condemned the government's actions, characterising them as "more than just an assault on a constitutional right; they signify another step in the erosion of democratic principles."
He also stressed that the recent vanishing of thousands of applications from the RTI website is just the tip of the iceberg, hinting at more profound, underlying issues.
Kharge also expressed reservations about the proposed amendment to the RTI Act, camouflaged under the guise of the Data Protection Act.
In a tweet in Hindi, he labelled it a "covert attack on the Right to Information by an authoritarian government," chastising the government for what he perceives as a lack of transparency.
Kharge's statements come on the heels of recent observations by RTI activists who noticed a significant reduction in their previous application records on the RTIOnline portal. This portal serves as an indispensable resource for citizens seeking access to public information from the Union government.
Independent verification by reports has substantiated these observations, revealing instances where applications and responses from past years had inexplicably disappeared from the portal. This raises substantial concerns regarding transparency and accountability in the government's operations.
