Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Party leader, returned to Canada’s Parliament after a sweeping by-election win in Alberta’s Battle River-Crowfoot. The victory followed his April defeat in Ontario’s Carleton seat. While the result restores his presence in the House, Poilievre faces a party leadership review in January and a looming challenge from Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has made his way back to the Canadian Parliament after winning a by-election in Alberta’s Battle River-Crowfoot constituency. This comes just months after his shocking defeat in April’s federal election, where he lost his long-held Carleton seat in Ontario to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy.
The Alberta riding, considered a Conservative stronghold, handed Poilievre a comfortable victory. Within an hour of polls closing on Monday, networks projected his win as results showed him securing more than 80% of the vote share. His nearest challenger, independent candidate Bonnie Critchley, garnered only a fraction of the support.
The by-election attracted unusual attention due to Poilievre’s high-profile return, resulting in higher turnout than the federal election earlier this year. Elections Canada confirmed over 14,000 voters participated in advance polls. Interestingly, the ballot featured 214 candidates — a protest effort by the “Longest Ballot Committee” against Canada’s electoral system.
Poilievre succeeds Damien Kurek, who had captured the seat in April with a commanding 83% of the vote but resigned to make way for the Conservative leader’s re-entry into Parliament. He will now face Prime Minister Mark Carney in the House of Commons when it reconvenes in September.
Despite this strong comeback, Poilievre faces internal challenges. The Conservative Party will review his leadership in January after failing to convert a significant lead into victory during the federal election. The Liberals, rejuvenated under Carney after Justin Trudeau’s resignation, managed to retain power with a minority government.

For Poilievre, the by-election victory restores his parliamentary voice but also sets the stage for a tough battle ahead against both Carney and critics within his own party.
