A joint operation by security forces in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district has killed nine Maoists. This engagement is part of intensified efforts to combat Left-wing extremism, which have led to a significant reduction in Maoist-affected areas and violent incidents across India since 2010.

Nine Maoist rebels have been killed in an operation carried out by security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district. The operation which started this morning involves the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The operation, launched around 10:30 AM as per the inputs, is a part of the stepped up operations against Maoists in the area. As the operation goes on, several weapons have been seized among them a Self-Loading Rifle, a . 303 Rifle, and a . 315 Bore Rifle.

This incident has occurred at a time when there has been a rise in operations against Left-wing extremism in India. According to the government records, 147 Maoists were killed in 104 encounters from December 2023 to August 2024, 723 arrested and 622 surrendered.

The government’s strategy involves opening of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in the Maoist dominated areas. Since December last year, 33 new FOBs have been established in different districts of Chhattisgarh including Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada, Narayanpur, Kanker and Rajnandgaon.

This integrated concept is not only to perform intelligence operations but also to help civic authorities to expand development programs to the remote villages influenced by the insurgency.

The effectiveness of these efforts is seen in the fact that Maoist violence has been centralized geographically. In 2013, such incidents were reported in 126 districts of 10 states. This has reduced to 38 districts in nine states by 2024, which is a contraction of the insurgency geography.

In addition, the government claims that there has been a 73% decrease in Maoist related violent activities since 2010, which shows that there has been a lot of improvement in the fight against the rebels.

As the operation in Dantewada goes on, the authorities have said that all security forces are accounted for and are safe. The search operation is still ongoing and may produce more information; officials have assured the public that more information will be released once the operation is complete.

This incident shows that the problem of Left-wing extremism in India is still relevant, but at the same time, the government is actively working to solve it both with the help of security forces and through the implementation of social programs.
