Diplomatic Stand: India Votes for UN Resolution Against Israeli Settlements in Palestine

India has backed a UN resolution denouncing Israeli settlement activities in Palestine. In a significant diplomatic move, India has thrown its weight behind a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlement activities in the Palestinian territories. The resolution, titled "Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan," was approved on November 9 and passed with 145 nations voting in favour on Saturday.

India's positive vote demonstrates its opposition to Israel's settlement growth in the occupied areas. Despite India's backing, important countries such as the United States, Canada, Israel, Hungary, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Nauru voted nay. Eighteen countries did not vote.

Saket Gokhale, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress, expressed delight with India's decision. Gokhale said on X (previously Twitter), "A resolution was moved in the UN yesterday seeking to declare Israeli settlements in Occupied Palestine illegal." I'm delighted that the Republic of India voted in support of the resolution. The occupation of Palestine by Israel through settlements is ILLEGAL. Apartheid in Israel must cease NOW."

The vote signifies India's commitment to international norms and its position on issues related to territorial integrity and sovereignty. This diplomatic move aligns with India's historical support for the Palestinian cause. The global community's majority support for the resolution sends a strong message against the expansion of Israeli settlements, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.

As the UN resolution gains momentum, India's role in promoting global consensus on the issue underscores its influence in international diplomacy. The vote not only reflects India's commitment to justice and fairness but also reinforces its standing as a key player in shaping global political discourse.
