In a tragic incident that unfolded on Thursday night, unknown assailants carried out a meticulously coordinated attack in Diyala province, eastern Iraq, claiming the lives of at least 11 civilians. The assailants deployed both guns and explosives, creating a harrowing scenario in the Muqdadiyah area.

Security officials, grappling with the aftermath, revealed that the attackers triggered a roadside bomb, exploiting the ensuing chaos to unleash gunfire on rescuers and bystanders who rushed to the scene. The assailants managed to escape the scene before authorities could apprehend them, leaving a community in shock and mourning. Notably, no group has promptly claimed responsibility for the attack, adding an element of mystery to the already devastating event.

Diyala governor Muthanna al-Tamimi, expressing determination, pledged to relentlessly pursue the perpetrators of this heinous terrorist act. Meanwhile, Nechirvan Barzani, the president of the Kurdish region, emphasized the urgent need for a united front against terrorism. The Diyala province has been a recurrent hotspot for violence, witnessing periodic attacks attributed to Islamic State cells and sporadic clashes rooted in sectarian tensions between Shia and Sunni Muslims. Moreover, rival militias, along with their tribal and political allies, have engaged in deadly struggles for dominance and control over lucrative networks, resulting in additional casualties.

Barzani, advocating for enhanced collaboration, urged greater cooperation between the Iraqi army, Kurdish peshmerga forces, and other security entities. He also emphasized the importance of aligning efforts with the US-led international coalition, particularly in the ongoing fight against ISIS. As the region grapples with this latest tragedy, it serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges posed by terrorism and the imperative for collective action.
