In a significant move ahead of Russia's Presidential elections, India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, arrived in Moscow for a crucial five-day visit. This visit holds immense importance amid the backdrop of escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the incumbent Kremlin leader, Vladimir Putin, expected to reclaim office despite the ongoing military operation in Ukraine.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry emphasized the stability and resilience of the enduring India-Russia partnership. Described as a 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,' this alliance is the cornerstone of discussions during Jaishankar's visit.

Key meetings are scheduled, including with Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, focused on trade and industry deals. Additionally, discussions are expected with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, concentrating on bilateral and global affairs. However, clarity remains uncertain regarding a potential meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

An essential agenda item is the potential expansion of BRICS, with reports suggesting Pakistan's expressed interest in joining the bloc under Moscow's presidency. Recent news from the Russian agency TASS highlighted Islamabad's application for BRICS membership in 2024. Pakistan's Ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, underscored this interest in a recent interview.

Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS alliance, formed in 2010, has contemplated inviting six additional nations to join, a decision made during the last summit in South Africa.

This diplomatic mission by Jaishankar holds immense promise, intertwining discussions on bilateral ties, trade agreements, and the potentially transformative expansion of the BRICS alliance, setting the stage for strategic global partnerships.
