The geographical coordinates of the earthquake were determined to be 25. 19°N latitude and 94. It is situated at 31°E longitude with the focus depth of 30km below the earth’s surface. This location pins the source of the tremors to the Ukhrul district, characterized by high altitudes and an ethnologically diverse demography.

While a magnitude 3. As per the seismic scale, 3 earthquake is characterized as minor to moderate, however, it had intensity to be noticed by people of Ukhrul and its neighboring regions. This could be the reason why the intensity of the shaking was so high when the earthquake occurred at the surface since it was relatively shallow.

For now, there is no loss of life and infrastructure has not been much affected. Mayors and other local officials are already performing risk evaluations for the inhabitants’ protection and to determine the effects of the quakes on existing structures.

The region of Manipur and other states in the northeastern part of India falls in seismic zone IV, where there are frequent occurrences of small and big earthquakes. This recent event reminds the populace and builders in the region about the need to prepare for an earthquake and to observe the building codes.

The NCS remains on high alert in the area and residents are urged to remain vigilant in case of any more quakes or aftershocks may occur. However, emergency services are on alert to intervene in case of any unpredictable events.
