An ED officer was injured during a raid in Delhi’s Bijwasan area while investigating a cyber fraud case. The team was attacked by the accused and his family. The probe uncovered a large cybercrime network laundering money through mule accounts and cryptocurrency. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
An Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer was injured during a raid in Delhi’s Bijwasan area on Thursday while investigating a cyber fraud case. The incident occurred when an ED team raided the premises of a chartered accountant (CA), Ashok Sharma, linked to a massive cybercrime network.
According to the ED, Sharma and his family allegedly attacked the team upon their arrival at a farmhouse. Five individuals were reportedly involved, with one managing to flee the scene. The injured officer, identified as an additional director of ED, was part of the High-Intensity Unit (HIU), which had launched the raid as part of an ongoing probe into illicit funds generated from thousands of cybercrimes. These include phishing scams, QR code fraud, and part-time job scams.
The ED revealed that the crime network utilized over 15,000 mule accounts to launder funds. These accounts were used to acquire debit and credit cards, which then facilitated the transfer of money to virtual accounts on UAE-based payment aggregator Pyypl. The laundered funds were subsequently used to purchase cryptocurrency.
Following the attack, the ED team filed an FIR at the local police station. Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the accused. The Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) and Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) assisted in analyzing thousands of crime reports, leading to the discovery of the network's financial operations.
