The Election Commission of India will announce the poll schedule for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections today. In Maharashtra, the ruling BJP-led coalition faces the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, while in Jharkhand, the ruling JMM will go up against the NDA. Both parties have been holding strategy meetings ahead of the election dates.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections at 3:30 PM today. The term of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will end on November 26, while the 81-seat Jharkhand Assembly’s term concludes on January 5, 2025.
In Maharashtra, the election will be a contest between the ruling Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party, and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, which includes the Congress, Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT). Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), part of the INDIA bloc, will face off against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the BJP, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), and Janata Dal (United).
The BJP is expected to release its first candidate list for Maharashtra in the next two days, with more than 60 names pending approval by the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC). BJP’s Maharashtra unit has already shortlisted around 100 candidates. Meanwhile, the Congress party has also been strategizing for the Maharashtra polls, focusing on seat-sharing agreements with its Maha Vikas Aghadi allies.
