According to an announcement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to Officially open the new Parliament building on May 28.

On Thursday, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, held a meeting with Prime Minister Modi in order to extend an invitation for him to inaugurate the newly constructed Parliament Building.

The original deadline to complete the project was November last year.

According to the Lok Sabha statement, the construction of the New Parliament Building has been successfully finished, and this architectural marvel represents the essence of a self-reliant India, commonly known as Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The construction of the current Parliament building was finished in 1927, but it has been noted that it currently does not adequately meet the space requirements of today.

Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha expressed dissatisfaction with the existing seating arrangements, hampering the productivity of the members.

Consequently, resolutions were passed in both Houses urging the government to construct a new Parliament building.

According to a statement by the Lok Sabha, a new building has been constructed adjacent to the current Parliament House. This new structure will have the capacity to accommodate a larger number of Members of Parliament (MPs) than the current capacities of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

The Lok Sabha will be able to accommodate 888 MPs, compared to the current capacity of 543, while the Rajya Sabha will be able to accommodate 300 MPs, up from the existing capacity of 250.

After the Prime Minister ceremonially initiated the construction process by laying the foundation stone on December 10, 2020, the actual building construction commenced in January 2021. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by November 2022.

The architectural design of the building was undertaken by HCP Design, Planning and Management, an Ahmedabad-based firm that serves as a consultant to the Central Public Works Department for the broader Central Vista redevelopment project. The construction Work was carried out by Tata Projects Ltd.
