Gujarat Titans were left to celebrate a victory that was empty of any meaningful joy after all their playing XI, including the Impact Player, were penalized by the IPL match officials for maintaining a slow over-rate during the game at Ahmedabad.

The Titans skipper Shubman Gill received a fine of 24 lakh rupees as a big financial hit as the second over-rate offense of the season for his team. The rest of the Gujarat players too were not spared and the amount of their match fees were deducted either Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees whichever is lesser.

However, the penalties made Gujarat's 35-run win without a shine saw Gill (104 off 55 balls) and B Sai Sudharsan (103 off 51) brutally smashing brilliant centuries in a mammoth 231/3. Although they came close to winning with a total of 196/8, CSK lost in the chase to the opposition team.

Gujarat's win placed the team in 8th position with 10 points from 12 games, while CSK's score remained at 4th with 12 points. Nevertheless, the Titan's net run rate is -1. 063 suggests they must go 2-0 in their remaining matches to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Gill said that Gujarat lost some runs on the field as they failed to raise the final overs’ rate better. "However, 250 was there for the taking.  I felt we missed by 10-15 runs, not in the match but in the net run rate. " The skipper said.

The big fines will pinch the Gujarat players' pockets, and the resulting lesson is that the players have to maintain the over rates in their upcoming matches so that they can keep their hopes of making it to the playoffs alive.
