Bollywood's beloved Dream Girl, Hema Malini, tied the knot with the industry's "He-Man," Dharmendra, on May 2, 1980. Hailing from a Punjabi background, Dharmendra always had a fondness for food. However, Hema Malini never felt the need to cook to impress him. It was only when her daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol, expressed their disappointment over her lack of culinary endeavors that she decided to learn cooking.
In a candid moment on The Kapil Sharma Show, Hema shared, "I never had to cook. I never had to cook to make Dharam Ji happy. Both of us were occupied with our respective work."
However, her perspective on cooking shifted after the arrival of her daughters. Hema realized the significance of knowing how to cook when her elder daughter, Esha, started attending school. Esha's friends would proudly showcase the delicious dishes their mothers had prepared, leaving her feeling upset as she couldn't share any such experiences. Frustrated, the young Esha would come home and express her discontent, saying, "You are not cooking anything." This deeply affected Hema, prompting her to call her mother and express her feelings of regret for not being taught cooking earlier.
Hema Malini embarked on her culinary journey during her family vacations overseas. While in London, she would reach out to her mother in India for recipes and guidance. With her newfound determination, Hema would prepare comforting dishes like rasam and other delicacies for her daughters. Reflecting on this experience, she mentioned, "My true venture into cooking started during our vacations abroad. I would dial my mother's number all the way from London to Bombay, seeking her valuable advice on what to do."
During the show, Esha, who was present alongside her mother, shared fond memories of their experiences abroad. She mentioned, "All of these delightful moments took place during our time overseas, where enjoying Indian food was a special treat. Amma would prepare rasam for us, and we would eagerly return to our apartment after exploring London, excitedly requesting 'Mummy ka rasam' instead of dining out at restaurants."
However, Hema Malini never acquired a liking for traditional Punjabi cuisine. When Kapil Sharma inquired whether she had ever tried "paranthe" considering Dharmendra's Punjabi roots and the general fondness for "paranthe" in Punjab, the acclaimed Sholay actor responded with a smile, saying, "When he visits our home, he relishes eating idli, sambhar, and dosa."
