In a groundbreaking announcement, Honda Motor, General Motors, and Cruise have unveiled their ambitious plan to launch a driverless ride service in Japan by early 2026. This collaborative effort is set to transform the way people commute in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Honda Motor, a prominent name in the automotive industry, disclosed its intention to create a joint venture with General Motors and Cruise. This venture will serve as the platform for realizing the vision of a driverless ride service in Japan within the next five years.

The three corporate giants are gearing up to establish this joint venture by the first half of 2024, pending the necessary regulatory approvals, as confirmed in a statement by Honda. The move signals a significant shift in Japan's transportation landscape, embracing the future of autonomous mobility.

Cruise, General Motors' cutting-edge robotaxi unit, has already made strides in the autonomous ride service industry with limited services available in San Francisco. Rivaling Cruise Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo also offers its autonomous ride solutions. Honda had previously committed to investing $2 billion in Cruise over a span of 12 years, showcasing their dedication to the autonomous future.

The key to this innovative service lies in the Cruise Origin vehicle, which was a collaborative effort between General Motors, Cruise, and Honda. The service's initial launch is slated for central Tokyo, utilizing dozens of these Origin vehicles before expanding the fleet to a remarkable 500 autonomous vehicles.

The companies are also planning to extend this groundbreaking service to regions beyond central Tokyo, effectively revolutionizing transportation in Japan. Honda highlighted that customers will have the convenience of hailing rides and making payments via a dedicated smartphone application, ensuring a seamless and modern commuting experience.
