IMD has warned of a cold wave in five southern West Bengal districts over the weekend, with temperatures expected to dip significantly. Kolkata already recorded a minimum of 14°C, with similar drops anticipated across the region. Residents are advised to prepare for colder weather and take necessary precautions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning for five districts in southern West Bengal — Purulia, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, and Birbhum — for the upcoming weekend. The warning comes as temperatures in the region continue to dip below seasonal norms.
Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 14°C on Friday morning, which is two degrees below the normal. IMD officials attributed this drop to dry north-westerly and northerly winds prevailing at lower levels.
“Night temperatures in these districts are expected to drop significantly, leading to cold wave conditions over the weekend,” an IMD official stated. Other districts in the state are also likely to experience a temperature drop of 2–4°C below normal.
A cold wave is officially declared when the minimum temperature in plains drops to 10°C or lower, or shows a deviation of 4.5°C to 6.4°C below the average range. Severe cold wave conditions occur when temperatures fall over 6.4°C below normal, according to IMD guidelines.

The chilly weather is expected to impact daily life, prompting residents to brace for colder nights and early mornings. Authorities have advised precautions, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly and children.
