The opposition INDIA alliance outperformed the BJP in recent assembly bypolls, winning 6 out of 13 seats across seven states. Trinamool Congress swept Bengal, Congress won in Himachal Pradesh, and AAP secured Jalandhar West, dealing a blow to the ruling party.
More so in the recent assembly bypolls, the INDIA opposition alliance has triumphed in the latest tests of voters’ sentiment winning six out of the thirteen seats in contention across seven states. The ruling BJP lost the majority of its seats, clinching only one seat which was a set back for the party after its poor show in the Lok Sabha polls held last month.
In the bypolls conducted on July 10, it was evident that Trinamool Congress was leading in West Bengal, having won all four seats. In Himachal, the Congress has won two out of three seats, and the Chief Minister of the state, Sukhvinder Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur has won from Dehra. In the Jalandhar West assembly constituency of Punjab, the AAP scored a victory with Mohinder Bhagat securing more than 37,000 votes in front of his nearest competitor.
Some of the noteworthy successes of the opposition were Congress triumphs in the Dehra and Nalagarh of Himachal Pradesh, and better performances in Manglaur and Badrinath of Uttarakhand. The Trinamool Congress candidates scored victories by a wide margin in Bagda, Ranaghat and Raiganj constituencies and was leading in Maniktala also.
The only consolation for the BJP was in the Hamirpur seat in Himachal Pradesh where their candidate narrowly won by a margin of 1,571 votes against the Congress contender. In other states, the party remained a marginal force, losing critical races that had been considered winnable.
Such bypoll results are crucial in interpreting the political dynamics that emerge in the wake of the recently conducted Lok Sabha polls. This will enable the INDIA alliance to garner more voters for the next polls and make the opposition group more energetic as the country heads to the next state polls.
Since there are outstanding results in some constituencies, politicians and other stakeholders are eager to get outcomes so that they could analyze the changes in the national political system. The results of these bypolls might have serious consequences for both the NDA government and INDIA alliance in the next few months.
