Prime Minister Modi has issued a strong warning to Canada over rising Khalistani extremism, following a temple attack in Brampton. Modi's remarks reflect India's growing frustration with Canada’s response, which some officials claim serves Canadian political interests. With upcoming elections, both countries are set for heightened diplomatic tensions.

The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada continues to be strained, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi issuing a stern warning to Canada over the rise of Khalistani extremism. Modi’s call to the Trudeau government followed a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, which has fueled tensions between the two nations. The incident has prompted both Modi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to openly criticize the Canadian government for allegedly fostering an environment that supports extremism for political gain.

PM Modi emphasized the need for the Canadian government to take stronger actions against extremists, particularly those advocating for Khalistani separatism. However, the Canadian administration has responded by making accusations against India, a move that some Indian officials see as an attempt to deflect attention and appeal to certain voter demographics in Canada. Khalistani groups reportedly hold political sway in Canada, particularly within communities that are crucial to Trudeau’s Liberal Party, giving them influence over Canadian politics.

Jaishankar also highlighted the historical context, noting that India’s government has consistently raised the issue of Khalistani extremism since the 1985 Air India bombing, which was linked to such groups. Despite ongoing concerns, the situation has escalated under the current Canadian administration, which appears to be downplaying the threat for electoral advantage.

India’s officials have made it clear that any future acts of extremism will be met with direct accountability, placing heightened pressure on Canada’s government to address the concerns raised by Modi. With Canada’s general elections looming, the international community will be watching to see if Canada’s approach changes, or if tensions with India will continue to escalate.
