India reports its first case of Mpox Clade 1, a strain declared a public health emergency by WHO. The 38-year-old patient from Kerala had recently returned from the UAE. Health officials emphasize the need for surveillance amid rising global concerns over the monkeypox outbreak.
India has officially reported its first case of the Mpox Clade 1 strain, recently designated a public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). The infected individual, a 38-year-old man from Malappuram district in Kerala, had returned from the United Arab Emirates. Health officials have stated that the patient is currently stable and under medical observation.
The Mpox Clade 1 strain is part of the monkeypox virus, which has been causing alarm due to its rapid spread and severe health implications. The WHO's declaration of this strain as a public health emergency last month was a response to the increasing number of cases and fatalities across various African nations, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where over 30,000 suspected cases have been reported this year.
This recent detection in India marks a significant development, as the country had previously reported cases of the West African Clade 2 strain. According to health ministry spokesperson Manisha Verma, the new case underscores the need for heightened surveillance and preventive measures, especially with the potential for the virus to spread rapidly.

As global health authorities continue to monitor the situation, health experts urge the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent further outbreaks. The emergence of Mpox Clade 1 in India raises concerns about the broader implications for public health and safety, necessitating a coordinated response from health officials and communities alike.
