Based on survey results that emerged after the conclusion of the seven-phase general elections, the ruling BJP alliance in India is set to secure a comfortable parliamentary majority, ensuring Narendra Modi a third term as Prime Minister of the country.

While the polls were inaccurate in the last general elections, several opinion polls published on Sunday revealed that the BJP-led NDA could secure between 355 and 380 of the 542 directly elected seats in the Lok Sabha, which is the lower house of Indian parliament. Currently, a party or an alliance to form a government needs 272 seats.

The Congress party in opposition along with its allies were predicted to win between 125 to 165 seats as per the exit polls. If so, this would be a massive triumph for Modi, whose BJP run on the promise of the construction of a Ram temple in a place that has been a matter of dispute and the government’s schemes for the welfare of the people.

However, the marathon election was conducted at a time when the unemployment rate was high, the price level was soaring, and accuse from opponents were of weakening democracy with the help of Modi’s Hindu nationalist government. The prime minister has denied interference with the activities of the opposition.

The results have been announced by the Election Commission and the final results have yet to be announced on June 4. It means that nearly 1 billion population of India was eligible to vote in the largest democracy of the globe.

When asked for the first time whether the voter turnout was high after the voting was over Modi said, ‘India has voted in record numbers to re-elect the NDA government. ’ But he also cautioned the people against believing the exit polls.

The next government will have to respond to the following critical challenges, among others: fostering growth in an economy that grew at a meager 6 percent before the financial crisis. 1% in the latest fiscal year, which means that it is far from the 8% that is necessary to be able to meet the job requirements of the millions of youths who are joining the job market each year.
